GUEST

Katsura Sunshine Rakugo performer

Katsura Sunshine is a rare figure in Japan’s traditional arts scene—a Canadian-born rakugo performer who has built a career mastering a 400-year-old Japanese storytelling craft.

Originally a playwright and theatre producer in Toronto, his journey took an unexpected turn after discovering similarities between Greek comedy and Japanese performance. What began as a short trip to Japan quickly became a lifelong pursuit.

Why did we reach out to Katsura Sunshine?

At Unpacking Japan, we’re always interested in stories that go beyond the typical “expat experience.” It’s not often that you see a foreigner break into one of Japan’s most traditional and highly structured art forms. His journey highlights not only passion, but also the discipline, humility, and persistence required to succeed in an environment where outsiders are rare.

We wanted to learn more about his story and share what it truly takes to enter a centuries-old Japanese tradition—and whether something so deeply rooted in Japanese culture can resonate on a global scale.

What we talked about:

Discovering Rakugo

Rakugo is a traditional Japanese form of comic storytelling with a history spanning over 400 years. It is performed by a single storyteller using only minimal props.

Katsura Sunshine’s introduction to rakugo happened almost by chance. He first encountered this art form through the owner of his favorite yakitori restaurant, who would host rakugo performances after service hours.

Watching a live performance for the first time, he was immediately captivated—and from that moment, decided to pursue a career as a rakugo performer.

What Makes Rakugo Unique?

Unlike modern stand-up comedy, rakugo follows a highly refined structure. Each performance begins with a “makura” which is a conversational, often humorous introduction where the storyteller reads the audience and gradually leads into the main story. The comedic stories themselves are passed down from master to apprentice over generations.

Rather than creating entirely new material, a lot of performers reinterpret classic stories. There are hundreds of these stories, and performers select them based on the audience and atmosphere, creating a performance that feels both traditional and spontaneous.

The Reality of Becoming a Rakugo Performer

To become a professional, Katsura Sunshine underwent a strict apprenticeship lasting several years. This involved not only learning the art itself, but also carrying out daily tasks such as cleaning, preparing kimono, and assisting senior performers backstage.

Much of the training is indirect, as apprentices are expected to observe and anticipate their master’s needs. Contrary to what some might expect, this process helps develop an intuitive understanding of the audience and how to adapt performances accordingly.

Katsura Sunshine’s Future With Rakugo

Today, Katsura Sunshine continues to perform rakugo internationally in both Japanese and English. If you’re interested in experiencing his work firsthand, you can catch his performances in Japan or in New York on Broadway!

Looking ahead, he aims to further expand the reach of rakugo, with ambitions such as producing a Netflix comedy special and introducing the art form to even wider audiences.

As Japan continues to grow in international popularity, stories like his raise an interesting question: how much of traditional culture can evolve—and how much should remain unchanged? Only the future can tell. Listen to our podcast below to learn more details about Katsura Sunshine’s amazing journey!
